// About the Founder
John Alexander, CPA, CA, ICD.D, is a financial and operational leader with experience across complex, high-growth, and highly regulated environments.
Early in his career, John stepped into the Director of Finance role at the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government, a 400+ employee organization operating in a complex funding and governance environment. At the time, the organization was under significant financial pressure. Within one year, he led a financial turnaround that restored stability, improved key financial indicators, and eliminated the risk of external intervention.
He later moved into the private sector, helping build and scale operations in Canada’s emerging cannabis industry. At Zenabis, John was part of growing a pre-licensed facility into a national operation, helping scale the team from 12 to over 400 employees and supporting production, compliance, and distribution across the country.
Following this, he led the rollout of retail operations in Newfoundland, opening 8 stores in 18 months, growing the team to over 70 staff, and executing a full rebrand and relaunch within 48 hours. The business quickly became a market leader in both store and product sales.
Most recently, at NBIF, John worked within a venture capital environment, supporting financial oversight, funding structures, and capital allocation across a portfolio of companies, while contibuting to investment and risk-related decision-making.
His experience combines financial expertise with hands-on operational leadership, giving him a practical perspective on how decisions perform in real-world environments.
John was awarded the CICA Gold Medal for achieving the top mark in Eastern Canada on the Chartered Accountant final examination. He also teaches at the university level and serves on multiple boards, bringing an independent perspective grounded in both financial discipline and real-world operating experience.
